There are many opportunities to get started in fashion design if that's your passion. You have two options: you can choose to study at one of the many universities offering a degree in fashion designing, or you could go to your local community college to learn courses. You don't have to live in the same place as you do for your degree, but it is important that you choose a school with the right program and affordability.
The University of Cincinnati's fashion design program is strong and has four stars. Students can gain real-world experience through the cooperative education model. This requires them to work full time in the industry during alternating semesters.
Fashion Design at UC prepares graduates to be leaders in the industry through communication three-dimensionally through color and fabric. They are taught the importance of quality workmanship as well as how their work impacts others.
One of the most recognizable fashion designers in the world, Iris van Herpen, has mastered the art of creating sculptural garments through the use of high-tech processes. In order to create unique pieces that are both innovative and beautiful, she works with metal umbrella rings, industrial yarns as well as woven metal and transparent acrylic.

Iris is passionate for collaboration and is always seeking new ways to expand the possibilities of clothing. Her work has been displayed internationally. She's also worked with engineers, architects, and other designers to expand the possibilities for fashion and design.
She is also well-known for her extravagant costumes that she uses to bring Jane Austen’s themes to life. She's currently showing her opulent costumes at the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati, where they're on display until Sept. 4.
Van Herpen used real Northside residents as models for her fashion show. This is an integrated community of African-American and professional Caucasian residents. They were trained in how to walk, and how to pose for photos on a runway. The project engaged the city's diverse population.
The project was displayed at Fashion Arts Toronto festival, and received international and local press coverage. It's an example of how a fashion stylist can use a specific collection on a location to create history, culture, social dynamics.
A fashion collection that is specific to a particular location can be very powerful in a city like Cincinnati where there are many diverse communities. This project allowed me to utilize my creative talents as well as my city knowledge to address a topic that was very dear to my heart: racial and racial segregation.

This in mind, I designed a site-specific fashion line that was inspired by Cincinnati's culture, history, and geography. The collection was named "Grey Cincinnati" because it aimed to bring together the diverse population of Cincinnati into a forum for cultural discourse.
To inspire my designs, I used historic census maps, city landmark architecture, and racial separation to help me. The solutions were done in a series grey colors as a reference to the city’s major ethnic groups. The collection was completed with local fabrics sourced from the oldest locally-owned fabric store in the area.
